Empty Bowls Project Benefits the Food Bank
Release Date - Nov 05, 2013
In order to raise awareness of hunger in our communities, local artists and students have gotten together to host an Empty Bowls Soup Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 10th from 1-3pm at Temple Israel (601 N. Montgomery) in Gary. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. The dinner includes "bottomless" bowls of soup or chili. All proceeds will go to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana to help feed hungry families this holiday season.
The premise for the Empty Bowls Project is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.
Two local residents, Elaine Spicer and Deborah Weiss, organized the event with the help of Deborah's art students at Wirt-Emerson School for Visual and Performing Arts. The students and local artists have created bowls that can be purchased or bid on at the dinner.« News Listings
