Hunger in Northwest Indiana
Food Bank vs. Food Pantry
People often confuse the Food Bank for a food pantry. A pantry is a charity that distributes food and grocery products directly to those in need. A food bank distributes food to local pantries and soup kitchens. A food bank is a warehouse where food is solicited, received, inventoried and then distributed. The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana does provide some direct services to clients, such as our BackPack, Kids Café, Pantry on the Go, Mobile Markets and Food Rescue Programs. In addition we also engage in community outreach that not only feeds hungry people, but helps give them the building blocks to break the cycle of poverty.
