Who does our food help? Food banks serve an extensive network of organizations in each of your respective communities. These organizations serve one part of the community and know the needs of the people there.

Therefore, working together, the food bank and the community organization can serve a greater number of people in the most efficient way. Persons benefiting from the food bank include:
- Children
- Elderly
- Single parents
- Working poor
- Chronically ill
- Physically/mentally challenged
- Victims of disaster

NORTHWEST INDIANA STATISTICS: Statistics from the State indicate there are over 100,000 people living 125% under poverty in the 2 counties of our service area. The Cooperative Extension service indicates that 34% to 43% of those living in poverty in these 2 counties are children. According to the 2001 Hunger in America study, 42.8% of the members of households served by the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana are children under the age of 18 years of age, 10 % are elderly
During 2004 - Food Bank of Northwest Indiana distributed over 2 million pounds of goods through 90 network charities in Lake and Porter counties. Feeding over 225,000 people. (Some individuals visited the pantries more than once.) These agencies are monitored by Food Bank of Northwest Indiana to assure that they are meeting the guidelines set by America's Second Harvest, the Food industry and state & federal governments. Food Bank of Northwest Indiana also provides agencies with technical support and information to help them in their efforts to reduce hunger. |
